AEP Texas Continues Power Line Work on Mustang Island, Road Closures Expected

August 15, 2020

Beginning Monday, August 17, occasional road closures will occur on Highway 361 near Mustang Island to safely accommodate AEP Texas crews and large utility trucks working on the Mustang Island Shield Wire Replacement Project.

This work on a section of the power line requires closing outside road lanes in the following areas on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. as AEP Texas crews progress along the power line route:

  • Approximately two miles between the intersection of Royal Sands Boulevard and State Highway 361, and Access Road 1-A

  • Approximately one mile between the intersection of Access Road 1-A and State Highway 361, and Howard Boulevard.

Motorists can expect to see construction signage and cones to aid traffic flow in the area.

The Mustang Island Shield Wire Replacement Project a $5.4 million investment to ensure electric reliability for customers. The project involves replacing the shield wire, a protective cabling, on approximately 19 miles of electric transmission line.

AEP Texas is committed to keeping customers, employees and contractors safe and healthy amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Crews plan to take ongoing measures to work safely, including practicing social distancing and other prevention measures as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The project began in July and used helicopters along some sections of the power line route. AEP Texas crews expect to complete the project in its entirety by mid-September.
